The Rev. Lewytzkyj Seminarian Scholarship Foundation

Our Mission

To provide financial support to students from Ukraine wishing to enter seminary, serve God and support the spiritual growth of the people.

Our Program

Established in 1990, in memory of Very Rev. Dr. Wolodymyr and Halyna Lewytzkyj, the Foundation raises funds to provide scholarship to students with limited financial means. 100% of funds raised are earmarked towards tuition and they prepare to serve the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the US and Ukraine.

Preparing to Serve God and You

We live in rapidly changing times.  Seminarians train to address emerging challenges and to understand how to best offer healing, comfort and spiritual fulfillment to the faithful in contemporary life.

Our Successes

800 scholarships have been awarded since 1990.  400 scholarship recipients have been ordained and now minister in parishes in the US and Ukraine. Thank You, Donors!

Very Rev. Dr. Wolodymyr Lewytzkyj

Rev. Wolodymyr Lewytzkyj (1898-1969) was born into a dynasty of clergy dating back to the 1600’s.  He studied at the Lviv Faculty of Philosophy until his conscription into the Ukrainian Galician Army and then the Ukrainian National Republic army.   Following the War for Independence, Lewytzkyj completed his Doctorate of Theology at the Lviv Theological Seminary, and his Doctorate of Philosophy at the University of Vienna. Fluent in nine languages, he often wrote and presented in those languages.

Clergyman and Patriot

Dr. Lewytzkyj’s ordination in 1930 ushered in the 10th generation of clergy in the Lewytzkyj family. In Rev. Wolodymyr’s first ministry (Podilla), he remained a steadfast proponent of Ukrainian language and culture despite reprisals from the occupation.  With the outbreak of war in 1939, forced to flee to Lemkivshyna, he assumed directorship of the school system, ministered in Cholm and served as Vice President of the Ukrainian Central Organization. Rev. Wolodymyr joined the Ukrainian underground as General Secretary of the Ukrainian Central Organization in Berlin, supporting Ukrainians fleeing war-torn Ukraine.

The American Journey

Rev. Lewytzkyj immigrated to the U.S. in 1949 to serve as secretary to Metropolitan Ioan (Teodorovych) of Blessed Memory, editor of the church newspaper Dnipro and the Ukrainian Herald. Rev. Wolodymyr founded St. Andrew’s Parish (D.C), ministered at St. Mary’s (Allentown, PA), and finally at St. Michael’s Parish (Minneapolis), where he continued to work tirelessly in establishing a strong parish, the Orthodox Clergy Association and the local Ukrainian community.  The multi-faceted and energetic Rev. Wolodymyr co-initiated Ukrainian Orthodox Day, revitalized a strong Ukrainian school, served as spiritual advisor to the Ukrainian Orthodox League and Dean of the Midwestern Deanery. For more than 39 years, Rev. Wolodymyr paved the way for improved cooperation and a sense of community.  His actions and words united his deep faith in God with an unwavering love and hope for a free Ukraine.

His Memory Lives On

He is remembered for his dedication to Church, Ukraine, his oratory skills, writings, historian, teacher and love of family. The early and tragic death of son, Ihor, ended the Lewytzkyj clergy dynasty. In memory of Rev. Wolodymyr’s dedication to God and Church, the Rev. Lewytzkyj Seminarian Scholarship Foundation has become the 11th generation.

Students from Ukraine that are supported by the Lewytzkyj Fund come to the United States to study at Saint Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary in Somerset, New Jersey. Saint Sophia's primary, though not exclusive, goal is to assist in the formation and to train true Orthodox pastors, teachers, and leaders of the people of God who follow the example set by our Lord God and Savior, Jesus Christ, in His own earthly ministry.
