Beloved Clergy and Faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the United States of America,

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

With gratitude to Almighty God, we greet you on the blessed and historic occasion of the 249th anniversary of the independence of the United States of America. As we prepare to enter the 250th year of this nation’s founding, we pause with reverence and reflection to consider the divine gift of liberty and the responsibility it entrusts to all who call this land their home.

In 1776, a courageous assembly of leaders proclaimed to the world a new experiment in human dignity and governance, grounded in the radical affirmation that all men are “created equal,” endowed by their Creator with “unalienable Rights” to “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” This declaration echoed a biblical truth long cherished by the faithful: that every human being is created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:27), and is thus inherently worthy of dignity, justice, and freedom.

As Ukrainian Orthodox Christians - many of whom are descendants of immigrants who came to these shores seeking religious freedom and opportunity - we offer a prayer of thanksgiving to the Lord for the blessings of liberty, and for the democratic ideals that have shaped this nation and provided sanctuary to the persecuted and a voice to the voiceless.

This nation’s journey, like that of ancient nations and every people striving for righteousness, has not been without hardship. Across the span of nearly two and a half centuries, America has wrestled with profound moral and social challenges - slavery and racial injustice, the struggle for civil rights, wars abroad and conflicts at home, political divisions, and threats to the sanctity of human life and conscience. Yet in every trial, the nation’s strength has been rekindled when it remembered the source of its hope: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” (Psalm 33:12).

Today, as citizens of a 21st-century world defined by technological advancement, cultural complexity, and geopolitical tension, we are called to renew the founding vision of this republic - a vision where freedom is not license, but a sacred trust; where speech is not noise, but a channel for truth; where government is not power, but service; and where every human life is not disposable, but a reflection of divine light.

We reaffirm, as Orthodox Christians, the sanctity of life at every stage, the freedom of religious conscience, and the importance of civil discourse shaped by truth, compassion, and humility. We pray that our society may always protect the rights of individuals to live in dignity, raise families, pursue education, and worship freely according to the dictates of their conscience.

As our nation’s motto boldly declares, “In God We Trust.” In this trust, we find the wellspring of hope for a future grounded in moral clarity and spiritual renewal. As Orthodox Christians, we are reminded by the Apostle Paul, “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom” (2 Corinthians 3:17). True freedom, both for the individual and for a people, comes not only from political liberation but from spiritual transformation. As we enter the 250th year of the American story, let us recommit ourselves - personally, communally, and nationally - to walk in the light of God’s commandments, to raise children who seek virtue, and to build communities rooted in compassion, service, and peace.

In this solemn moment, we also raise our hearts in profound gratitude to the government and people of the United States of America for their unwavering support of the people of Ukraine during the brutal aggression of the Russian Federation. The defense of Ukraine is not merely a matter of politics or policy - it is a defense of truth over tyranny, of freedom over fear, and of the sacred dignity of a sovereign people determined to live in peace and liberty.

We, as bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, pledge our continued prayers for the United States, for its leaders and citizens, and for the deepening of the friendship between our two nations. May this partnership, rooted in shared values and human solidarity, grow ever stronger as we face the challenges of our time with courage and unity.

On this Independence Day, we ask God to bless America - its people, its institutions, and its future. May the Lord grant wisdom to its leaders, peace to its cities, protection to its defenders, and justice to all who live within its borders. And may He continue to guide this nation along the path of righteousness, for His name’s sake.

With joy and solemnity, we offer heartfelt congratulations to all Americans on this 249th celebration of liberty. May God bless each of you and this land which we call our earthly home.

З вдячністю Всемогутньому Богу вітаємо вас з благословенною та історичною нагодою 249-ї річниці незалежності Сполучених Штатів Америки. Готуючись вступити в 250-й рік заснування цієї нації, ми зупиняємося з благоговінням і роздумами, щоб пороздумувати над божественним даром свободи і відповідальності, яку вона покладає на всіх, хто називає цю землю своєю домівкою.

У 1776 році відважне зібрання лідерів проголосило світові новий експеримент щодо людської гідності та управління, заснований на радикальному твердженні, що всі люди «створені рівними», наділені Творцем «невід'ємними правами» на «життя, свободу і прагнення до щастя». Ця декларація перегукується з біблійною істиною, яку здавна плекають віруючі: кожна людина створена на образ і подобу Божу (Буття 1:27), а отже, за своєю природою достойна гідності, справедливості та свободи.

Як українські Православні Християни, багато з яких є нащадками іммігрантів, що прибули до цих берегів в пошуках релігійної свободи та можливостей, ми підносимо молитву подяки Господу за благословення свободи та за демократичні ідеали, які сформували цю націю та надали притулок переслідуваним і голос безголосим.

Шлях цього народу, як і шлях стародавніх народів та кожного народу, що прагне до праведності, не був позбавлений труднощів. Протягом майже двох з половиною століть Америка боролася з глибокими моральними і соціальними проблемами - рабством і расовою несправедливістю, боротьба за громадянські права, війнами за кордоном і конфліктами всередині країни, політичними поділами, загрозами святості людського життя і совісті. Але в кожному випробуванні сила народу відроджувалася, коли він пам'ятав про джерело своєї надії: «Благословенний народ, у якого Бог Господь» (Псалом 33:12).

Сьогодні, як громадяни світу XXI-го століття, що визначається технологічним прогресом, культурною складністю та геополітичною напруженістю, ми покликані відновити основоположне бачення цієї республіки – бачення, де свобода не є ліцензією, а священною довірою; де слово не є шумом, а каналом істини; де уряд не є владою, а служінням; і де кожне людське життя не є незначущим, а є відображенням божественного світла.

Як православні християни, ми підтверджуємо святість життя на кожному його етапі, свободу релігійної совісті та важливість громадянського дискурсу, заснованого на правді, милосерді та смиренні. Ми молимося, щоб наше суспільство завжди захищало права людей на гідне життя, створення сім'ї, здобуття освіти та вільне віросповідання згідно з велінням совісті.

Як сміливо проголошує девіз нашої нації: «На Бога уповаємо». У цій довірі ми знаходимо джерело надії на майбутнє, засноване на моральній чистоті та духовному оновленні. Як православні християни, ми пам'ятаємо слова апостола Павла: «Господь є Дух, а де Господній Дух, там свобода.» (2 Коринтян 3:17). Справжня свобода, як для окремої людини, так і для народу, приходить не тільки від політичного визволення, але й від духовного перетворення. Вступаючи в 250-й рік американської історії, давайте поновимо наші зобов’язання - особисто, спільнотно і на національному рівні - ходити у світлі Божих заповідей, виховувати дітей, які прагнуть чеснот, і будувати спільноти, вкорінені в милосерді, служінні та мирі.

У цей урочистий момент ми також піднімаємо наші серця в знак глибокої вдячності уряду та народу Сполучених Штатів Америки за їхню непохитну підтримку народу України під час жорстокої агресії Російської Федерації. Захист України - це не просто питання політики - це захист правди над тиранією, свободи над страхом та священної гідності суверенного народу, який прагне жити в мирі та свободі.

Ми, Єпископи Української Православної Церкви США, запевняємо вас в нашій постійній молитві за Сполучені Штати, за лідерів та громадян, а також за поглиблення дружби між нашими народами. Нехай це партнерство, що ґрунтується на спільних цінностях та людській солідарності, стає дедалі міцнішим, особливо в часі коли ми мужньо та в єдності зустрічаємо виклики нашого часу.

У цей День Незалежності ми просимо Бога благословити Америку - її народ, її інституції та її майбутнє. Нехай Господь дарує мудрість її лідерам, мир її містам, захист її захисникам і справедливість усім, хто живе в її кордонах. І нехай Господь і надалі провадить цей народ дорогою праведності в Його cвяте Ім`я.

З радістю та урочистістю ми щиро вітаємо всіх американців з цим 249-м святом свободи. Нехай Господь благословить кожного з вас і цю землю, яку ми називаємо нашим земним домом.
