In the historic city of Paris, France - a crossroads of culture, philosophy, faith, and human history - a fraternal meeting took place between His Eminence Archbishop Daniel of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and the Western European Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Diaspora, and His Eminence Metropolitan Dimitrios of France of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The meeting unfolded at the headquarters of the Holy Metropolis of France, where the hierarchs gathered in the spirit of Christian brotherhood, mutual respect, and shared pastoral responsibility for the people entrusted to their care throughout Western Europe.

Accompanying Archbishop Daniel during the visit were Rev. Fr. Alexander Smoktunowicz, Dean of the Munich Region of the Western European Eparchy, and Very Rev. Fr. Vasyl Bahlai - pastor of the Holy Apostle Simin Zealot Ukrainian Orthodox Parish in Paris, France. Representing the Holy Metropolis of France alongside Metropolitan Dimitrios was Mr. Kostantinos Vetochnikov, taff member and assistant to the Metropolitan, whose warm hospitality reflected the genuine spirit of Orthodox Christian fraternity and love.

The cordial encounter became far more than a formal visit between hierarchs of the Church. It served as a living testimony to the unity of Orthodoxy and to the sacred mission of the Church in a world increasingly wounded by spiritual confusion, moral uncertainty, secularism, war, displacement, loneliness, and the fragmentation of family and communal life. In a society where many people search desperately for meaning and truth, the Orthodox Church continues to proclaim Christ - “the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8) - as the eternal answer to the deepest longing of the human heart.

During the meeting, Archbishop Daniel and Metropolitan Dimitrios exchanged reflections concerning the contemporary pastoral, theological, social, and moral challenges confronting Orthodox Christians throughout Western Europe, particularly within France. They discussed the unique reality of ministering to faithful of many ethnic, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds who now form the rich mosaic of Orthodox life across the continent. Greeks, Ukrainians, Romanians, Serbians, Georgians, Arabs, converts from Western societies, refugees fleeing war, and countless seekers of truth increasingly gather under the spiritual embrace of the Orthodox Church in Western Europe.

The hierarchs reflected upon the fact that Orthodoxy in Western Europe is no longer merely an “immigrant faith,” but has become a living and growing witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ within modern Western civilization itself. In cities once shaped by Christian thought yet now deeply affected by secular ideologies, Orthodoxy offers not merely religious identity, but a therapeutic and transformative way of life rooted in communion with the living God.

Metropolitan Dimitrios spoke about the sacred responsibility of the Church to remain spiritually open, pastorally compassionate, and firmly grounded in the unchanging truth of Holy Tradition while ministering to people living amid rapidly changing social realities. Archbishop Daniel echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the Orthodox Church must continue to become a place of healing for wounded souls, refuge for displaced families, hope for the suffering, and spiritual light for younger generations searching for authentic faith.

Visiting the St. Stephen's Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Metropolis of France, Archbishop Daniel prayerfully shared: “The Church is not called simply to preserve memories of the past, but to reveal the living presence of Christ in every generation. The Orthodox Christian faith offers modern humanity not ideology, but transformation - not isolation, but communion - not fear, but the hope of the Resurrection.”

The hierarchs also reflected upon the growing presence and witness of Orthodox Christianity throughout Western Europe and throughout the world. Despite wars, persecution, secularization, and societal instability, the Orthodox Church continues to flourish through the sacramental life of the Church, monastic witness, charitable ministry, theological education, and the faithful commitment of clergy and laity alike.

Particular attention during the conversation was given to the pastoral ministry among refugees, immigrants, and families displaced by war and economic hardship. Archbishop Daniel shared reflections concerning the humanitarian ministry carried out through the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and its cooperation with Orthodox communities serving suffering people throughout Ukraine and Europe. Metropolitan Dimitrios emphasized the importance of preserving human dignity and spiritual identity among those uprooted by suffering and uncertainty.

The discussion also touched upon the essential role of theological education and spiritual formation in preparing future clergy and faithful leaders capable of ministering in contemporary Western society. The hierarchs noted that the future of Orthodoxy in Europe depends not upon political influence or external power, but upon the spiritual authenticity of Orthodox Christian witness - faithful clergy, spiritually grounded families, prayerful communities, and hearts transformed by Christ.

As the meeting progressed in an atmosphere of sincerity and mutual respect, the conversation naturally became a witness to the universal nature of Orthodoxy itself. Though faithful may come from many nations and cultures, they are united in one Eucharistic Chalice, one apostolic faith, and one spiritual mission - to bring humanity into communion with God.

Archbishop Daniel expressed profound gratitude to Metropolitan Dimitrios for his gracious hospitality, openness of heart, and dedicated ministry to the Orthodox faithful of France. He noted the remarkable witness of the Holy Metropolis of France in cultivating Orthodox unity, theological dialogue, and compassionate pastoral ministry within one of Europe’s most culturally influential societies.

At the conclusion of the fraternal meeting, commemorative gifts were prayerfully exchanged as visible signs of brotherly love, ecclesiastical unity, and mutual support in the shared mission of Christ’s Holy Church. The exchange symbolized not only personal friendship between hierarchs, but also the enduring unity of the Orthodox Church across nations, languages, and cultures.

As Archbishop Daniel and his accompanying clergy departed the Holy Metropolis of France, the encounter remained a powerful reminder that the Orthodox Church continues to stand as a beacon of spiritual truth, healing, and hope in the modern world. Amid the uncertainties of contemporary civilization, the Church calls humanity not merely to survive, but to rediscover the beauty of life in Christ - the eternal Kingdom already revealed in the life of the Church.

For in every generation, and in every land, the mission of Orthodoxy remains unchanged: to sanctify the world through the presence of Christ, and to guide every human soul toward the light of the Resurrection and the eternal love of God.

Братерська Зустріч Православного Служіння у Західній Європі:

Архієпископ Даниїл зустрівся з Митрополитом Димитрієм Франції

У історичному місті Парижі, Франція - перехресті культури, філософії, віри та людської історії - відбулася братерська зустріч між Високопреосвященнішим Архієпископом Даниїлом Української Православної Церкви США та Західноєвропейської єпархії Української Православної Церкви в Діаспорі і Високопреосвященнішим Митрополитом Димитрієм Франції Вселенського Патріархату. Зустріч проходила у приміщенні Митрополії Франції, де архіпастирі зібралися у дусі християнського братерства, взаємної поваги та спільної пастирської відповідальності за людей Божих, довірених їхній духовній опіці по всій Західній Європі. 

Архієпископа Даниїла під час візиту супроводжували о. Олександр Смоктунович, декан Мюнхенського регіону Західноєвропейської єпархії, а також протоієрей Василь Баглай -настоятель Української Православної парафії святого апостола Симона Зилота у Парижі, Франція. Від Митрополії Франції разом із Митрополитом Димитрієм участь у зустрічі взяв пан Костянтинос Вєточніков, співробітник та помічник митрополита, чия тепла гостинність стала справжнім відображенням духу православного братерства та любові у Христі. 

Ця сердечна зустріч стала значно більшою, ніж просто офіційний візит між ієрархами Церкви. Вона стала живим свідченням єдності Православ’я та священної місії Церкви у світі, який дедалі більше страждає від духовної розгубленості, моральної невизначеності, секуляризму, війни, вимушеного переселення, самотності та руйнування сімейного й суспільного життя. У суспільстві, де багато людей відчайдушно шукають сенс і правду, Православна Церква продовжує звіщати Христа - «Того Самого вчора, сьогодні і навіки» (Євр. 13:8) - як вічну відповідь на найглибші прагнення людського серця. 

Під час зустрічі Архієпископ Даниїл та Митрополит Димитрій обмінялися думками щодо сучасних пастирських, богословських, соціальних та моральних викликів, з якими стикаються православні християни по всій Західній Європі, особливо у Франції. Вони обговорили унікальну реальність служіння вірним різних етнічних, мовних та культурних середовищ, які сьогодні формують багатогранну мозаїку православного життя на європейському континенті. Греки, українці, румуни, серби, грузини, араби, новонавернені із західних суспільств, біженці, які рятуються від війни, та численні шукачі істини дедалі більше збираються під духовним покровом Православної Церкви у Західній Європі. 

Архіпастирі роздумували над тим, що Православ’я у Західній Європі вже давно перестало бути лише «вірою емігрантів», а стало живим і зростаючим свідченням Євангелія Ісуса Христа у самому серці сучасної західної цивілізації. У містах, які колись формувалися під впливом християнської думки, але нині зазнають сильного впливу секулярних ідеологій, Православ’я пропонує не лише релігійну ідентичність, а терапевтичний та преображаючий спосіб життя, укорінений у сопричасті з Живим Богом. 

Митрополит Димитрій наголосив на священній відповідальності Церкви залишатися духовно відкритою, пастирськи співчутливою та водночас непохитно вкоріненою у незмінній істині Священного Передання, служачи людям у швидкозмінних соціальних реаліях. Архієпископ Даниїл підтримав ці думки, підкресливши, що Православна Церква повинна й надалі бути місцем зцілення для поранених душ, притулком для переселених родин, надією для стражденних та духовним світлом для молодого покоління, яке шукає справжньої віри. 

Відвідуючи Грецький православний кафедральний собор святого Стефана Митрополії Франції, Архієпископ Даниїл молитовно зауважив: «Церква покликана не лише зберігати пам’ять про минуле, але й відкривати живу присутність Христа у кожному поколінні. Православна християнська віра пропонує сучасному людству не ідеологію, а преображення - не ізоляцію, а співслужіння - не страх, а надію Воскресіння». 

Архіпастирі також обговорили зростаючу присутністю та свідченням Православного християнства у Західній Європі та в усьому світі. Попри війни, переслідування, секуляризацію та суспільну нестабільність, Православна Церква продовжує діяти через сакраментальне життя Церкви, монаше свідчення, благодійну діяльність, богословську освіту та вірне служіння духовенства і мирян. 

Особливу увагу під час розмови було приділено пастирському служінню серед біженців, іммігрантів та родин, переселених через війну й економічні труднощі. Архієпископ Даниїл поділився роздумами щодо гуманітарного служіння, яке здійснює Українська Православна Церква США у співпраці з православними громадами, що служать стражденним людям в Україні та по всій Європі. Митрополит Димитрій підкреслив важливість збереження людської гідності та духовної ідентичності серед тих, хто був вирваний зі свого звичного життя через страждання та невизначеність. 

Розмова також торкнулася важливої ролі богословської освіти та духовного формування у підготовці майбутніх священнослужителів і церковних провідників, здатних служити сучасному західному суспільству. Архіпастирі зазначили, що майбутнє Православ’я в Європі залежить не від політичного впливу чи зовнішньої сили, а від духовної автентичності православного свідчення - вірного духовенства, духовно укорінених сімей, молитовних громад та сердець, преображених Христом. 

У міру того, як зустріч проходила в атмосфері щирості та взаємної поваги, сама розмова природно ставала свідченням вселенського характеру Православ’я. Хоча вірні походять із різних народів і культур, вони єднаються в одній Євхаристійній Чаші, в одній апостольській вірі та в одній духовній місії - привести людство до сопричастя з Богом. 

Архієпископ Даниїл висловив глибоку вдячність Митрополиту Димитрію за його щиру гостинність, відкритість серця та віддане служіння православним вірним Франції. Він відзначив визначне свідчення Святої Митрополії Франції у плеканні православної єдності, богословського діалогу та співчутливого пастирського служіння в одному з найбільш культурно впливових суспільств Європи. 

На завершення братерської зустрічі ієрархи обмінялися пам’ятними подарунками - як видимим знаком братньої любові, церковної єдності та взаємної підтримки у спільній місії Святої Христової Церкви. Ці миті символізували не лише особисте братерство між архіпастирями, але й непорушну єдність Православної Церкви через народи, мови та культури. 

Зустріч ієрархів стала потужним нагадуванням про те, що Православна Церква продовжує бути маяком духовної істини, зцілення та надії у сучасному світі. Серед невизначеностей сучасної цивілізації Церква закликає людство не просто виживати, але наново відкривати красу життя у Христі - вічного Царства, вже явленого у житті Церкви. 

Бо у кожному поколінні та в кожній землі місія Православ’я залишається незмінною: освячувати світ присутністю Христа та провадити кожну людську душу до світла Воскресіння і вічної любові Божої.
